Do Not Replace a Roof That Only Needs Cleaning
Shingle cleaning is something I learned about only after it was too late. Two summers ago my wife and I decided our roof was too unsightly to not do something about it.
We called a reputable roofing contractor and ask him about our asphalt shingle stains. We were informed the only solution was a total roof replacement. We bit the bullet even though $6500 was a little out of our budget; we knew it had to be done or so we thought.
We didn?t know why our 30 year shingles needed replaced after only 13 years and the contractor didn?t seem to know either, he only suggested we must have gotten a ?bad batch? of shingles. A year after our new roof was installed we noticed a neighbor having the same asphalt shingle streaks.
They refused to believe they needed a new roof so soon, they researched the dilemma and found that the streaks were actually some type of algae and that they could be cleaned without harming the shingles. They contacted a roof cleaning contractor and now their older but clean roof looks as good as our new roof and they only paid a fraction of what we did. This was a costly mistake and a tough lesson to learn.
